Common Acronyms

These terms will be thrown at you by all marketers and advertisers. Let us break them down into laymans terms.

CAN SPAM: Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing. A law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations.

CPA: Cost Per Acquisition. An online payment method by which advertisers pay for every sale or acquired client.

CPC: Cost Per Click. The most popular way to purchase traffic – made very popular by overture.com and then google adwords – with this method of purchasing traffic the advertiser only pays for the traffic that goes to their website.

CPL: Cost Per Lead. This allows advertisers to pay for every lead or customer inquiry that resulted from a visitor who clicked on a their advertisement.

CPM: Cost Per Thousand Impressions. An online payment model by which advertisers pays for every 1000 impressions of their advertisement.

CTA: Call to Action. A button on an ad that induces the viewer to perform a specific task e.g. ‘Buy Now’, ‘Find Out More’.

CTR: Click Through Rate. The percentage of impressions that resulted in a visitor.

GDPR: General Data Protection Regulation. A new data protection regulation released by the EU for early 2018 adoption. The GDPR is intended to strengthen data protection regulation and give individuals more control over how their personal data is being used.

KPI: Key Performance Indicator. A value used to measure how well an organization or individual is accomplishing its goals and objectives.

PPC: Pay Per Click. An online payment model by which advertisers pays for each click through made on their advertisement.

ROI: Return on Investment. A performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or compare the efficiency of a number of different investments.

SEM: Search Engine Marketing. A type of internet-based marketing associated with the researching, submitting and positioning of a website within search engines to achieve maximum visibility and increase your share of paid and/or organic traffic referrals from search engines.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization. The practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.
